Thank you for registering for the Hoof Care for Horse Owners Workshop! We look forward to meeting and working with each of you, and want to provide you with some additional information regarding the Workshop and the White Stallion Ranch.

Note

Don’t forget that any balance due must be received in full no later than thirty (30) days before the start of a Workshop! Please see the Registration page for payment information.

What to Bring, Etc.

During Workshop times, the weather in Tucson is generally rain-free and very sunny. We suggest bringing along sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat or cap, and a long-sleeved shirt if you don’t like using sunscreen! You’ll want a notebook and pen or pencil for taking notes during lectures, and you may also want to bring along a camera to capture specific Workshop items as well as Ranch scenery. Don’t forget your tools, including gloves, and a pair of pants you’re not terribly attached to for trimming, especially if you haven’t purchased an apron. And also note that trimming tools can’t be carried on a flight; they must be in checked baggage.

There is a large grocery store (with an ATM) and a drugstore located minutes from the Ranch, and we’ll be able to take students to them if necessary. There is also a large Walmart nearby, should some particular item of clothing, etc. be required.

There are a number of beverages available at the Ranch. All alcoholic beverages are in the Bar, and can be purchased there using the Ranch’s honor system. The Bar also has sodas, juices, and water available 24 hours a day – again, they can be purchased using the Ranch’s honor system. The Dining Room has coffee, hot chocolate, and assorted hot teas available 24 hours a day – no charge. They also have water, iced tea, and lemonade available most of the day and evening, for no cost.

There is a gift shop at the Ranch, open every day until early afternoon (2PM or 3PM). There is also a coin-operated aspirin, Tylenol, etc. vending machine in the Pool Room/Library behind the office, and a canned/bottled cold drink vending machine and a snack vending machine located in the Game Room.

For Ranch guests, there is a coin-operated laundry on the Ranch with two washers, two dryers, and a detergent vending machine. Quarters are available at the office.

General Format of Workshop Days

In general, mornings will be spent in the air-conditioned comfort of the Longhorn Center – the White Stallion Ranch’s conference center – listening to the lecture/theory portion of the Workshop. There are comfortable chairs, with tables to use as writing surfaces. The Longhorn Center has restroom facilities, and drinking water will be available throughout the morning. Part of Thursday morning will be spent over at the corral for the special sessions on horse training, horse & body positioning, and a live trimming demonstration.

In general, afternoons will be spent outside under shelter, where we’ll be trimming. The cadaver legs for trimming are stored in freezers immediately adjacent to the trimming space. There will be drinking water available, and restrooms are a 30-second walk away. Wednesday afternoon we’ll end trimming early to attend the weekly Ranch Rodeo – attendance optional, of course! And Thursday afternoon we’ll end trimming a bit early to allow time for a final Q&A period and closing remarks in the Longhorn Center.

These consultations will be conducted in front of the other students so that everyone may benefit from them. If you wish to have a personal consultation, you *must* register for it in advance, and you may be asked to provide photographs and/or videos if appropriate. The allotted time per student will be based on the total number of requests and the total number of horses. We realize some of the questions will undoubtedly be answered in the course of the Workshop, but if you *think* you'd like a consultation, please register now.
  • Please list each horse for which you are requesting a personal consultation along with a brief description of the issue you'd like to discuss e.g. "Ranger - constant hoof flaring," "Monique - weight issues," "Cowboy - chronic abscessing."
